Lower start predicted for TSX

Barrick, Asanko in focus



Stock futures pointed to a lower start for Canada's main stock index as a stronger U.S. dollar weighed on gold and oil prices.

The S&P/TSX composite index remained negative 13.36 points to conclude Monday at 15,187.40

The Canadian dollar faded 0.42 cents to 80.78 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Barrick Gold Corp said it would sell 50% stake in its unit that manages the Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea to China's Zijin Mining Group Co Ltd for $298 million in cash. The unit, Barrick Niugini, owns 95% in the Porgera mine and the Papua New Guinea government owns the rest. Zijin and Barrick will jointly control Barrick Niugini after the sale, which is expected to be completed in the third quarter.

Canaccord Genuity upped the target price on Asanko Gold to $2.80 from $2.50, with a speculative buy rating.

CIBC started coverage on Kinaxis Inc with outperform rating; target price $40.00, expecting the company to increase both revenue and earnings per share by at least 20% annually.

Canaccord Genuity started coverage on Klondex Mines with a buy rating, and a $5.00 target price.

U.S. stock futures are in negative territory following the long weekend, though the move down isn't dramatic.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials erased 21 points, or 0.1%, to 18,203, futures for the S&P 500 dipped 4.25 points, or 0.2%, to 2,120.25, and futures for the NASDAQ slid 7.5 points, or 0.2%, to 4,521.25

Shares in Time Warner Cable are up about 11% pre-market after Charter Communications confirmed plans to buy the firm as part of a three-way merger.

The deal could affect one in six American households since Charter is the third biggest cable television provider in the U.S., and Time Warner Cable is the second largest.

A few companies are sinking ahead of the open.

Shares in Etsy are off by about 4%, while Shake Shack and Transocean shares are both down around 2%.

There's a bunch of economic releases to watch Tuesday.

The Census Bureau reports data on April durable goods orders this morning, as well as the influential Case-Shiller real estate index will be released.

At 10 a.m., the government releases new home sales figures, and the Conference Board reports consumer confidence data for May.

Most European markets are also weaker in early trading.

Over in Asia, Chinese markets notched some serious gains.

China's Shenzhen Composite rallied 3.6%, putting gains so far this year at over 100% -- easily making it the world's top performing stock market.

Stocks in Shanghai and Hong Kong also jumped following a Friday announcement that mutual funds could start trading through a pilot program that connects the two markets.

Oil prices lost 68 cents to $59.04 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices fell $9.60 to $1,195.30 U.S. an ounce.
