Greek talks collapse


Futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index on Monday, tracking global markets, after efforts to end a deadlock between Greece and its creditors failed over the weekend.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 89.73 points to close the day and the week at 14,741.15. June futures were down 0.7% early Monday.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.18 cents to 81.03 cents U.S. early Monday.

The unsuccessful talks, which lasted less than an hour on Sunday, dragged on the euro and helped boost the dollar, which weighed on gold and oil prices.

Hudson's Bay Company is buying German department store chain Kaufhof from Metro for 2.8 billion euros ($3.2 billion) as a launch pad to expand into Europe.

Charterhouse Capital Partners said it had agreed to sell its stake in environmental consultancy Environmental Resources Management (ERM) to Canadian pension fund Omers for an enterprise value of $1.7 billion.

Bombardier's new CSeries narrow-body jet is outperforming expectations for fuel efficiency and performance, the Canadian manufacturer said on Sunday, as it tries to boost sales of the plane.

CIBC cut the target price on AGF Management to $7.00 from $7.75.

On the economic ledger, Statistics Canada reported that manufacturing sales in April fell 2.1% to $49.8 billion, the third decline in four months.

Moreover, the Canadian Real Estate Association was due out with its national home sales activity for May this morning.

U.S. stock futures are slipping, European markets are sliding and nearly all Asian markets have closed in the red.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials demurred 89 points, or 0.6%, to 17,720, futures for the S&P 500 dropped 10.75 points, or 0.5%, to 2,074.25, and futures for the NASDAQ settled 25 points, or 0.6%, to 4,422.25.

Shares of Integrys Energy were up 2.9% in extended trading. This comes after the last of several state and federal regulatory agencies approved a deal that would see Wisconsin Energy acquire Integrys for $9.1 billion.

Shares in Micron Technology are dipping pre-market by 2.3%, alongside competitor SanDisk, which is also off by nearly 2%.

The negative tone can be attributed directly to Greece, after the latest round of talks between the small nation and its creditors collapsed on Sunday.

The main market index in Greece is down by about 7%, led by a major drop in banking shares, including a 20% plunge in shares in Piraeus Bank. Greek 10-year bond yields are rising to 12%.

Many other key indexes in Europe are also down by about 1%.

Greece urgently needs more money to pay its bills, but hasn't been able to reach an agreement as the two sides wrangle over the terms of a deal.

Oil prices eased 68 cents to $59.28 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices picked up $1.20 at $1,180.40 U.S. an ounce.
