Futures Lurching Lower

Canadian Tire, Crescent Point in Focus


Stock futures pointed to a lower opening for Canada's main stock index as U.S. crude fell to its lowest level in nearly six-and-a-half years, putting pressure on energy shares

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 101.13 points to close Thursday at 14,238.40

The Canadian dollar faded 0.02 cents to 76.55 cents U.S. early Friday

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Amaya Inc to $48 from $46 following the company’s second-quarter results.

CIBC cut the price target on Canadian Tire Corp to $146 from $148 on the company’s second quarter results that fell short of expectations.

CIBC cut the price target on Crescent Point Energy to $33 from $35 after the company announced to cut its monthly dividend by 57% and reduce its 2015 budget.

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Onex Corp to $86 from $85 with buy rating, view the company’s shares as relatively attractive for investors with a medium-to-long term time horizon.

Among companies reporting earnings today, Ag Growth International is expected Q2 earnings of 66 cents per share, while Aimia Inc is expecting Q2 earnings of 22 cents per share

On economic matters, Statistics Canada reported that its monthly survey of manufacturing showed sales rose 1.2% to $50.8 billion in June, the second consecutive gain and the third increase since January 2015. Despite the gains in June, year-to-date manufacturing sales were down 1.5% from the same period in 2014.

The TSX Venture slipped 2.57 points Thursday to 576.01.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock futures were not making any major moves ahead of the open.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials slid 37 points, or 0.2%, to 17,332, futures for the S&P dropped five points, or 0.2%, to 2,075.50, and futures for the NASDAQ skidded 12.25 points, or 0.3%, to 4,505

But Nordstrom's stock is jumping in extended trading -- up about 5% -- after the company reported strong earnings.

J.C. Penney is reporting ahead of the open.

This morning, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is updating its producer price index for July.

Then, the Federal Reserve is posting industrial production figures for July.

The University of Michigan will post its consumer sentiment index for August.

Across the pond, European markets are mostly rising in early trading.

Asian markets ended with mixed results.

After three consecutive days of sharp falls, the Chinese currency has stabilized.

China's central bank said the yuan's adjustment is "basically completed" and that the currency will remain strong in the long run.

Greece is back in the headlines again. The country's parliament voted Friday to accept a third bailout agreement from euro-zone lenders after a marathon all-night debate.

Without these new bailout funds, worth roughly 85 billion euros ($95 billion U.S.), the country risks running out of money, defaulting on more debts and falling out of the euro-zone.

Oil prices inched up three cents to $42.26 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices gained $2.60 to $1,118.20 U.S. an ounce.
