Futures Forge Higher

Bombardier, Eastern Platinum in Focus


Stock futures pointed to a slightly higher opening for Canada's main stock index as three-month high gold prices offset weak commodities following limp China inflation data, while global markets were in the red.

The S&P/TSX composite index tumbled 119.63 points to end Tuesday trading at 13,844.73

The Canadian dollar hiked 0.32 cents to 77.03 cents U.S. early Wednesday

Bombardier said it is on track to certify its new CSeries CS100 jet by the end of the year, and is 100% committed to the program, which has not won a new firm order in over a year. The plane is now entering the final stage of flight testing, with all the high risk testing completed, which puts the first jet on track to be delivered to Lufthansa's Swiss unit in the first half of 2016.

CIBC cut the target price on Eastern Platinum to $1.00 from $1.50 considering that palladium price upside is likely to be constrained by platinum.

U.S. stock futures are holding steady, while stock markets in Europe and Asia move into negative territory.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials moved higher 21 points, or 0.1%, to 16,994, futures for the S&P 500 gained 3.5 points, or 0.2%, to 1,997.5, and futures for the NASDAQ picked up 7.5 points, or 0.2%, to 4,348.75.

Several corporate giants including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Delta and BlackRock were to post earnings before the opening bell.

Netflix is reporting after markets close this afternoon.

Shares in Intel and JP Morgan look set to dip at the open after the firms reported earnings on Tuesday afternoon.

Intel reported that third quarter sales were essentially unchanged compared to the same period last year, and earnings declined by about 6%. But the results still beat Wall Street expectations.

Meanwhile, JP Morgan results showed revenue slipped by 6% as it was hit by a double whammy last quarter: the Federal Reserve kept interest rates low and chaos slammed the financial markets.

SanDisk shares were rising by nearly 10% pre-market, after Bloomberg reported the chipmaker could be in merger talks with Micron and Western Digital. Micron's shares were also up 3% in extended trading.

Economically speaking, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will post September's producer price index. Investors watch the index for clues about where inflation is headed. The Census Bureau's monthly retail sales report also goes out at roughly the same time.

At 2 p.m. ET, Wall Street will look for the Federal Reserve's latest "Beige Book." The report outlines regional economic conditions.
