Futures Flat on China Data

Teck, CNR in Focus

Stock futures pointed to a slightly lower opening for equity markets in Canada on Tuesday as copper prices fell on worries that expectations of stronger demand from China were overly optimistic.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index faded 78.01 points to close Monday at 13,795.99. June futures came in off 0.1% Tuesday morning.

The Canadian dollar gained 0.16 cents to 79.04 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Teck Resources reported a surprise quarterly profit as cost-cutting measures and a weak Canadian dollar helped cushion the impact of lower coal and copper prices.

Canadian National Railway lowered its full-year earnings forecast, citing weaker-than-expected freight demand in some markets and a strengthening Canadian dollar.

Bombardier faces a pivotal week that may see a key deal announced with Delta Air Lines Inc but a federal aid package is unlikely to be approved in time for its annual meeting on Friday.

U.S. stock futures are holding steady as European markets move higher in early trading.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials sprang up 43 points, or 0.2%, to 17,945, while futures for the S&P 500 eked up 4.5 points, or 0.2%, to 2,087.75. NASDAQ futures advanced 5.75 points, or 0.1%, to 4,478.

It’s a heavy day for earnings reports, by the likes of BP, Hershey, T-Mobile US, Office Depot, Procter & Gamble, Coach, Fiat Chrysler, Jetblue Airways, Spirit Airlines, 3M, Barrick Gold and Thomson Reuters.

After the closing bell, Apple, Twitter, Chipotle Mexican Grill, eBay and AT&T report.

Investors will be watching Apple's earnings closely. The company is expected to say that its sales and profit both fell last quarter -- that would make them the worst set of results in 13 years.

Meanwhile, investors are keeping an eye on Twitter since shares in the firm have tanked by about 26% since the start of the year. Investors are worried about the company's ability to be a standalone, viable social network.

The latest Case-Shiller home price index, which tracks the health of the U.S. housing market, will be released at 9 a.m. ET.

The Conference Board will report U.S. consumer confidence figures for April at 10 a.m.

Asian markets ended the day with mixed results.

Gold prices fell $5.89 to $1,232.08 U.S. an ounce.
