Markets Expected to Edge Higher

Stock futures pointed to a slightly higher opening for markets in Toronto on Tuesday, tracking upbeat sentiment in global markets.

The S&P/TSX Composite came off its lows of the day, but still slid 36.82 points to end Monday at 14,689.04. December futures improved 0.1% Tuesday.

The Canadian dollar settled 0.25 cents to 75.97 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Sun Life Financial plans to expand into Singapore and Thailand as it looks to boost its presence in Asia where demand for insurance products is growing fast, a senior company executive said.

AstraZeneca's heart drug, Brilinta, has failed to help patients with serious circulatory problems in their legs, prompting the company to scrap a $3.5 billion-a-year sales target for the medicine by 2023.

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Air Canada to $14.00 from $13.00

U.S. stock index futures were headed for a flat open as investors awaited news on Deutsche Bank's settlement with the U.S. and looked ahead to speeches from members of the Federal Reserve.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 14 points to 18,170, while futures for the S&P 500 forged ahead one point, or 0.1%, to 2,154.25. NASDAQ futures gained 5.75 points, or 0.1%, at 4,871.50

In Europe, shares of the stricken German lender gained ground in their first day of trading following a long weekend. The bank saw a roller-coaster ride last week on the news that it would have to pay $14 billion to settle with the U.S. Department of Justice.

Negotiations on a settlement are still ongoing and speculation was rife over the weekend that the bank was aiming to lower the size of the penalty.

On the earnings front stateside, Darden Restaurants and Aegion posted quarterly results.

Today, the U.S. Federal Reserve and its rate hiking schedule will be back in focus for investors. Friday's scheduled release on September employment is the key data point for the week.

Ahead of that, no major data are scheduled for today and traders will instead eye two U.S. Federal Reserve speakers for indications on the likelihood of a December interest rate hike.

Oil prices dipped 21 cents to $48.60 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices fell $9.20 to $1,303.50 U.S. an ounce.
