Markets Soar on U.S. Election Eve

Tech, Industrials Higher


Equity markets in Toronto rose on Monday, helped by energy stocks and banks as oil prices gained and the FBI cleared U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of wrongdoing over emails just ahead of the U.S. election.

The S&P/TSX Composite jumped 152.57 points, or 1.1%, to greet noon at 14,661.82

The Canadian dollar gained 0.06cents to 74.67 cents U.S.

The heavyweight financials group gained, as Toronto-Dominion Bank rose 1.1% to $60.35 and Bank of Nova Scotia advanced 1.3% to $71.91.

Other influential gainers on the index included Suncor Energy, which rose 1.8% to $39.84, and Canadian Natural Resources, which advanced 1% to $40.53.

Magna International Inc gained 1.6% to $121.75 after reaching a new tentative agreement with a union at one of the auto parts maker's plants after a short strike.

Air Canada jumped 7.1% to $12.79 after the country's largest airline reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit and forecast lower costs for the current quarter.

Barrick Gold fell 5.4% to $23.17 and Goldcorp Inc declined 4.1% to $19.67.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange was down 5.08 points to 756.90.

All but two of the 12 TSX subgroups were higher, as information technology and industrials each jumped 2.1%, and energy soared 2%

The two laggards were gold, down 4.8%, and materials, off 2%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. equities kicked off the week on a high note, trading sharply higher on Monday after the FBI again cleared Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over her use of a private server.

The Dow Jones Industrials went skyward 343.96 points, or 1.9%, to break for lunch at 18,232.24, with UnitedHealth Group leading all 30 components higher.

The S&P 500 climbed 43.72 points, or 2.1%, at 2,128.45, with health-care and pharmaceuticals leading all sectors higher.

The NASDAQ composite index strengthened 118.45 points, or 12.4%, to 5,164.82

In a letter sent to Congress on Sunday, FBI Director James Comey said the bureau had "not changed its conclusions," reached in July, on Clinton's private email server. This new investigation, which came to light on October 28, kept financial markets across the globe on edge.

The economic data calendar is a light one on Monday, with consumer credit data for September due at 3 p.m.

Prices for the 10-year Treasury staggered, raising yields to 1.83% from Friday’s 1.77%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices gained 32 cents to $44.39 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices dipped $25.10 to $1,279.40 U.S. an ounce.
