Valeant, Dominion in Focus

Canadian stock index futures pointed to a lower opening as investors were on the sidelines just hours ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

The S&P/TSX Composite jumped 143.2 points, or 1%, to close Monday at 14,652.45

The Canadian dollar faded 0.08 cents to 74.75 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International reported a smaller-than-expected quarterly profit due to faltering sales of its dermatology products and irritable bowel syndrome drug, and the company cut its full -year profit and revenue forecasts

Dominion Diamond said on Monday it would relocate its head office to Calgary, in a move that would slash about 100 jobs and help the Canadian diamond producer save around $19 million a year.

CIBC raised the target price on Cargojet Inc. to $51 from $48, saying the company continues to see improving operating leverage and benefits from a strong competitive moat.

CIBC cut the target price on Fortuna Silver Mines to $12.5 from $13 to reflect the lower spot silver price.

CIBC cut the target price on Western Forest Products to $2.25 from $2.50, citing cedar pricing uncertainty.

The TSX Venture Exchange was down 4.11 points Monday to 757.87.

U.S. stock index futures indicated a flat open with investors focused firmly on the elections as voters head to the ballot box on Tuesday.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials settled 17 points, or 0.1%, to 18.175, while futures for the S&P 500 gave back 3.5 points, or 0.2%, to 2,125.50. NASDAQ futures fell 6.25 points, or 0.1%, to 4,769.50

The Dow rose approximately 370 points on Monday after the FBI again cleared Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over her use of a private server.

But investors are set for a bout of caution after the rally Monday.

Companies of note that reported Tuesday include Valeant Pharma and Momo.

In Europe, markets were slightly higher and most Asian bourses eked out modest gains overnight.

On the data front, the Job Openings and Labour Turnover Summary (JOLTS) report is due at 10.00 a.m. ET.

Oil prices subsided 16 cents to $44.73 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices advanced $1.70 at $1,281.10 U.S. an ounce.
