Futures Point Higher on Possible OPEC Output Cut

Teck, Valener in Focus

Stock futures pointed to a slightly higher opening for Canada's main stock index as oil prices rose ahead of a planned crude production cut led by the Organization of the Petroleum Countries, potentially together with non-OPEC member Russia

The S&P/TSX Composite seesawed through much of Wednesday, but lost 19.47 points to close at 15,080.91

The Canadian dollar was fairly flat at 74.15 cents U.S. early Thursday.

CIBC raised the target price on Teck Resources to $44.00 from $33.00, to reflect the persistence of strong met coal spot prices.

Valener Inc is out with earnings today, expecting a Q4 loss of 11 cents per share

European stocks were slightly higher in morning trade Thursday as investors focused on new economic data from Germany and increased expectations of a U.S. rate hike next month. Markets in Japan returned from holiday to see the Nikkei 225 to gain 0.9% to 18,333.41, while Chinese markets were flat.

Oil prices progressed six cents to $48.02 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices hesitated $4.30 at $1,185 U.S. an ounce.

On the economic beat, Statistics Canada reported that average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees were $957.00 in September, down 0.1% from the previous month and up 0.4% from 12 months earlier.

Moreover, non-farm payroll employees worked an average of 32.7 hours per week in September, unchanged from the previous month and down from 33.0 hours in September 2015.
