Futures Truck Higher as Oil Prices Climb

National, Timmins Gold in Focus

Canadian stock futures were higher as oil prices continued to gain in the wake of the decision last week by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to cut production.

The S&P/TSX Composite recovered 24.99 points to close the day and the week at 15,052.52.

The Canadian dollar inched up 0.01 cents to 75.24 U.S. early Monday.

Barclays raised the target price on National Bank of Canada to $52.00 from $48.00 on the back of strong performances in capital markets and wealth management.

National Bank Financial resumed coverage on Timmins Gold with an outperform rating, following the completion of the company’s previously announced equity financing.

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Monday as traders continued to digest a drop in unemployment to its lowest level in almost a decade and prepare for New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley's speech.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials hiked 77 points, or 0.4%, to 19,235. Futures for the S&P 500 gained eight points, or 0.4%, to 2,200. NASDAQ futures gained 21 points, or 0.4%, to 4,759.50

The expectation among investors is for the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates at its meeting later in December and Dudley's speech on Monday is set to be closely scrutinized for potential clues.

On the data front, Monday will see the ISM non-manufacturing index data released at 10 a.m. ET.

European stocks were marginally higher around noon on the continent after Italian voters opted against constitutional reform resulting in Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's expected resignation.

In Asia, the Shanghai Composite in China closed 1.2% lower, while the Nikkei in Japan closed 0.8% lower.

Oil prices gained 49 cents to $52.17 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices slid $7.10 at $1,170.70 U.S. an ounce.
