Futures Squeak Ahead

BlackBerry, CCL in Focus

Futures on Canada’s main stock index were higher on Tuesday as investors appeared to have shrugged off the impact of increased political tensions following Monday's deadly attacks in Germany and Turkey.

The S&P/TSX Composite took on 20.24 points to 15,272.44, with futures ahead 0.2% early Tuesday.

The Canadian dollar dropped 0.46 cents to 74.51 U.S. early Tuesday.

BlackBerry posted another loss and a 47.3% fall in third-quarter revenue on Tuesday as the software growth it is relying on failed to make up for shrinking handset sales and lost service fees.

CCL Industries Inc said it would buy Innovia Group, which supplies the new U.K. plastic five-pound note that has fallen foul of vegetarians, for around $1.13 billion.

Brazil unveiled a probable challenge against Canadian regional and government funding for Bombardier at the World Trade Organization, reviving a bitter trade feud between the Canadian jetmaker and Brazilian rival Embraer SA .

CIBC cut the target price on Fairfax Financial Holdings to $650.00 from $725.00

CIBC cut the target price on Linamar Corp. to $65.00 from $72.00

On the economic beat, Statistics Canada reported that wholesale trade increased 1.1% to $56.6 billion in October, offsetting most of September's 1.5% decrease.

The agency said gains were recorded in five sub-sectors, led by higher sales in the building material and supplies, motor vehicle and parts, and food, beverage and tobacco sub-sectors.

Meantime, the number of Canadians drawing regular employment insurance benefits numbered 575,200 in the same month, down 2,700, or 0.5%, from September.

The TSX Venture Exchange fell 14.14 points Monday, or 1.9%, to 721.08

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Tuesday in low-volume trade ahead of a slew of earnings.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials hiked 48 points, or 0.2%, to 19,885. Futures for the S&P 500 picked up 5.75 points, or 0.3%, to 2,265.75. NASDAQ futures added 8.75 points, or 0.3%, at 4,947.50

On the earnings front, CarMax, Darden Restaurants, FactSet and Blackberry all reported before the bell. FedEx, Nike and Steelcase are due to report after the bell.

There are no major U.S. economic data releases scheduled for Tuesday.

European markets were generally higher as morning turned to afternoon on the continent. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite in China closed 0.5% lower, while the Nikkei in Japan closed 0.5% higher.

Oil prices gained 38 cents to $52.50 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices faded $12.60 to $1,130.10 U.S. an ounce.
