Futures Eke Higher Wednesday

Futures for stocks in Canada’s largest market rose on Wednesday, a day after the main index touched its highest intraday level in more than 20 months.

The S&P/TSX Composite gained 106.58 points to close 2017’s first session at 15,394.17. Futures made their way up 0.1% Wednesday

The Canadian dollar leaped 0.74 cents to 75.14 U.S. early Wednesday

Encana Corp said it expects its margins in 2017 to exceed its previous target on lower costs and an expected rise in output in the second half of this year.

Loop Capital raised the price target on Canadian Pacific Railway to $221 from $206

Paradigm Capital raised the target price on Dundee Precious Metals to $5 from $2.75

Cowen and Company raises rating on Westjet Airlines to market perform from underperform

The TSX Venture Exchange roared ahead 10.65 points, or 1.4%, Tuesday to 773.02

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Wednesday as traders digested a bullish start to the year in the previous session.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 41 points, or 0.2%, at 19,839. Futures for the S&P 500 took on 5.25 points, or 0.2%, to 2,258. NASDAQ futures improved 10.25 points, or 0.2%, at 4,916.50.

Light vehicle sales data for December are the only major figures scheduled for release on Wednesday. On the earnings front, UniFirst are set to report before the bell with Sonic expected to report after the market close.

In Europe, the pan-European Stoxx 600 index was around 0.1% lower on Wednesday. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite in China closed 0.8% higher, while the Nikkei in Japan zoomed 2.5% higher.

Oil prices gained 45 cents to $52.78 U.S. a barrel

Gold prices moved upward $4.90 to $1,166.90 U.S. an ounce.
