TransCanada in Focus as Keystone OK’d

Stock futures pointed to a higher opening for markets in Canada’s biggest centre index on Wednesday, mirroring the trend in most global equity markets.

The S&P/TSX Composite climbed 130.56 points to close Tuesday at 15,610.69, with March futures up 0.3%.

The Canadian dollar gained 0.3 cents to 76.32 cents U.S. early Wednesday.

Canada's main stock index moved within reach of its all-time high on Tuesday as base metal and oil prices rose and U.S. President Donald Trump smoothed the path for TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Wednesday as traders eyed a deluge of earnings reports, while a post-election rally re-ignited.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials jumped 77 points, or 0.4%, to 19,921. Futures for the S&P 500 gained 8.25 points, or 0.4%, to 2,282.75. NASDAQ futures rallied 24.75 points, or 0.5%, at 5,121.

The Dow is to within sight of the 20,000-point mark, an important psychological level. Stocks rose on Tuesday after President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders.

On the earnings front, United Tech, Abbott Labs, Boeing and Novartis were among several companies that reported before the bell. AT&T, eBay, Qualcomm, F5 Networks, Las Vegas Sands, Vertex Pharma and Western Digital are among the major companies all due to report after the market close.

On the data front, Wednesday will see the FHFA home price index report for November released this morning.

In Europe, stocks were higher by early Wednesday afternoon. In Asia, the CSI 300 in China closed 0.3% higher, while the Nikkei in Japan closed 1.4% higher.
