Futures Signal Flat Start Monday

Fairfax, Cenovus in Focus

Futures for Canada's main stock index were little changed on Monday amid a fall in oil prices on signs of an increase in U.S. drilling activity.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index jumped 80.39 points to end the day and the week at 16,096.07

The Canadian dollar was static at 77.75 cents U.S. Monday morning.

December futures eked up 0.03% Monday.

Fairfax Africa Investments Proprietary Ltd will not proceed with a plan to buy 23% of cement producer PPC for two billion rand ($146.34 million U.S.), according to the South African company.

Citigroup raised the target price on Cenovus Energy to $13.00 from $10.00

Raymond James cut the price target on Keyera Corp. to $41.00 from $44.00

Eight Capital raised the price target on Royal Bank Of Canada by $6.00 to $113.00

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 5.34 points to close Friday at 792.96

U.S. stock futures gave back some of their initial gains on Monday following reports of an explosion at a terminal at New York City's Port Authority.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 22 points, or 0.1%, to 24,358

S&P 500 futures lost one point at 2,653, while futures on the NASDAQ Composite index gained three points, or 0.1%, to 6,361.50

On the earnings front, Casey's General Store is expected to report today.

A senior New York City Police Department official said that one person was in custody following the incident. Police also said the person in custody sustained a minor injury. New York City police later confirmed there was an explosion in Port Authority.

Looking to today's data, the main piece of economic news set to be released is the Job Openings and Labour Turnover Survey (JOLTS) data, due out at 10 a.m. ET.

While there are no major speeches set to take place by the U.S. Federal Reserve on Monday, investors will be waiting for the upcoming monetary policy meeting by the Federal Open Market Committee, to see if the central bank raises interest rates for the final time this year.

Overseas, European stocks were fluctuating around the flatline noon local time, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 acquired 0.6%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index marched ahead 1.1%

Oil prices gained nine cents to $57.45 U.S. per barrel.

Gold prices took on three dollars to $1,251.40 U.S. an ounce.
