Stocks Straddle Flat Line at Open

Suncor, Kinder in Focus

Canada's main stock index seesawed on Wednesday as declines for industrial and consumer discretionary shares offset gains for technology and utility stocks.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index eked ahead 1.85 points to open Wednesday at 16,265.01

The Canadian dollar inched up 0.02 cents at 76.1 cents U.S.

The drop was caused by an outage at Syncrude Canada's oil sands facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta, which supplies to the U.S.
Suncor shares, which owns Syncrude, gained 40 cents each to $53.70

Kinder Morgan Canada said in a filing on Tuesday it is restarting construction in August on the Trans Mountain pipeline's expansion after halting work in the spring due to opposition from environmentalists and other groups as Canada prepares to buy the project in a bid to boost the country's oil exports.

Kinder Morgan lost two cents a share to $15.87, in the first hour of trading.

National Bank of Canada raised the price target on Innergex Renewable Energy to $19.00 from $18.00. Innergex shares poked up a penny to $13.94.

The newly elected Ontario government announced on Tuesday it would end the province's cap-and-trade program, a policy designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling one of Premier Doug Ford's election promises.

Oil prices slid 25 cents to $73.89 U.S. per barrel.

Gold prices strengthened $3.60 to $1,257.10 U.S. an ounce.

The TSX Venture Exchange inched forward 0.61 points to Wednesday to 740.57

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups were pointed downward in the first hour of trading, with health-care swooning 0.3%, while industrials and materials slipping 0.2% each.

The four gainers were utilities, up 0.4%, information technology, up 0.2%, and consumer staples, up 0.1%.
