TSX Down on Energy Losses

Entrec, Tervita Lower

Canada's main stock index opened marginally lower on Thursday, as energy shares fell on the back of slightly lower oil prices.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index surrendered 3.77 points, to open Thursday at 15,091.25

The Canadian dollar eked up 0.01 cents at 75.6 U.S.

The Kyrgyz prime minister's press service says Centerra Gold has promised Kyrgyzstan's government that it will produce at least 15.5 tonnes of gold at the giant Kumtor mine this year

Centerra shares took on eight cents, or 1.4%, to $5.63.

CIBC cut the rating on Cardinal Energy to neutral from outperform. Cardinal shares backtracked four cents, or 1.3%, to $3.08.

Canaccord Genuity cut the target price on Entrec to $0.20 from $0.25. Entrec shares were static at 17.5 cents.

Canaccord Genuity raised the target price on Tervita to $13.50 from $12.50. Tervita shares gained 18 cents, or 1.9%, to $9.93.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada reported those drawing regular employment insurance benefits numbered 446,500 in September, down 14,300, or 3.1%, from August.

Oil prices slid 0.27 cents to $54.36 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices gained $2.38 to $1,227.95 U.S. an ounce.

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 0.2 points to 604.25

The 12 subgroups were evenly split, with consumer staples up 0.6%, real-estate better by 0.3%, and information technology improving 0.2%.

The half-dozen laggards were weighed most by financial and utility stocks, each off 0.3%, and gold, down 0.2%.
