Futures Rise on Last Friday of ‘18

Aphria, Husky in Focus

Futures for Canada's main stock index rose on Friday, as oil prices bounced back from the previous session's steep losses.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index restored 385.02 points, or 2.8%, to end Thursday at 14,165.21

The Canadian dollar inched forward 0.02 cents at 73.43 U.S. early Friday

March futures improved 0.7% Friday.

Aphria said that Green Growth Brands’ proposed $2.8-billion all-stock hostile bid undervalued the company.

Eight Capital cut the target price on Husky Energy to $20.00 from $22.00

The TSX Venture Exchange recovered 4.37 points Thursday to 537.28

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher open on Friday for the three major indexes in the U.S., as Wall Street gets set to build on back-to-back rallies.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 119 points, or 0.5%, to 23,272

Futures for the S&P 500 picked up 12 points, or 0.5%, to 2,507,

NASDAQ futures jumped 16 points, or 0.3%, to 6,339.50.

The rise in futures comes after a wild day on Wall Street that saw stock indexes recover from steep losses to post solid gains. The Dow closed 260.37 points higher on Thursday and the S&P 500 ended the day up 0.9% The NASDAQ, for its part, closed 0.4% higher.

Thursday’s gains during the cash session added to Wednesday’s historic rally in which the major indexes had their best day in nearly 10 years.

Stocks are still, however, on track for their worst December performance since 1931. The S&P 500 is still down 9.8% so far this month, while the Dow has lost 9.4% during the period.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 sank 0.3% in its last session of 2018, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index squeezed up 0.1%

Oil prices advanced 27 cents to $44.88 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices docked 80 cents to $1,208.30 U.S. an ounce.
