Futures for Canada's main stock index were higher on Monday, as oil prices rose on hints of progress on a possible Sino-U.S. trade deal.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 56.79 points, to close the day and a short Christmas week at 14,222.
The Canadian dollar eased 0.03 cents at 73.36 U.S. early Monday
March futures rocketed 0.8% Monday.

NASDAQ futures hiked 58.75 points, or 0.9%, to 6,352.

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump said he had a "very good call" with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade. The president also claimed that "big progress" was being made on this front. Trump’s statements sparked gains in markets worldwide.
Following the comments, however, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump “may be overstating how close the two sides are to an agreement,”
Overseas, in Japan, markets were closed to finish out 2018, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index shot up 1.3%
Oil prices gathered 92 cents to $46.25 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices gained $2.70 to $1,285.70 U.S. an ounce.
