Futures Lower Wednesday

CNR, Loblaw in Focus

Futures for Canada's main stock index edged lower on Wednesday, after global equity markets eased on growth worries.

The S&P/TSX Composite finished solidly positive 53.8 points Tuesday to 16,572.68

The Canadian dollar eked up 0.02 cents to 76.15 cents U.S. early Wednesday

September futures removed 0.2% Wednesday.

Canadian National Railway beat analysts' estimates for quarterly adjusted profit on Tuesday, as the country's largest railroad operator shipped higher volumes of crude, refined petroleum products and grains.

Loblaw reported a 2.4% fall in quarterly profit, as the Canadian food retailer continues to invest in building its e-commerce network and retail stores.

Shareholders of WestJet Airlines on Tuesday voted in favor of its deal to be acquired by billionaire Gerry Schwartz's private equity firm Onex Corp for $3.5 billion.

J.P. Morgan raised the target price on Rogers Communications to $70.00 from $69.00

RBC raised the price target on Roxgold to $1.40 from $1.25

U.S. stock index futures dropped on Wednesday after disappointing quarterly reports from Boeing and Caterpillar while trade worries remain.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials lost 90 points, or 0.3%, to 27,234.

Futures for the S&P 500 fell 6.75 points, or 0.2%, at 3,001.25

NASDAQ futures dipped 32.75 points, or 0.4%, to 7,951

Boeing shares dropped more than 1% in the pre-market before paring losses after the aerospace giant posted a massive loss for the previous quarter. The loss comes as costs pile up while its 737 Max jet remains grounded.

Caterpillar shares slid 3% after the company reported weaker-than-expected earnings and revenue amid rising costs.

About a quarter of S&P 500 companies have reported second-quarter earnings so far. Of those companies, 78% have posted a better-than-expected profit

Wall Street also kept a close eye on tech stocks as companies in the sector face mounting regulatory pressure. Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet all traded lower in the pre-market after the Justice Department announced a broad anti-trust review of big tech companies.

In terms of data, there will be manufacturing and services Purchasing Managers Index readings, and new home sales later this morning.

Stocks closed higher in the previous session after media reports circulated that American and Chinese negotiators will meet for face-to-face talks next week.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 index gained 0.4% Wednesday, while in the Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index inched up 0.2%,

Oil prices gained 12 cents to $56.89 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices picked up $4.50 to $1,426.20 U.S. an ounce.
