TSX Fairly Flat to Begin Week

Wheaton, Kirkland Lake in Focus

Canada's main stock index opened mildly positive on Monday as strength in major metal miners was offset by losses in the energy sector, while a U.S. holiday kept trading volumes low.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index started the week off with a gain of 34.54 points to 17,943.57.

The Canadian dollar dropped 0.03 cents to 78.30 cents U.S.

Resource stocks led the parade, as Wheaton Precious Metals gained 53 cents, or 1%, to $51.28.

In the gold sector, Kirkland Lake Gold hiked 54 cents to $50.59.

Tech issues also had a running start with Photon Control gained six cents, or 2.8%, to $2.24

Energy stocks slumped, as Crescent Point Energy dipped five cents, or 1.4%, to $3.66.

Oil prices were unchanged at $52.36 U.S. Gold prices upped $3.60 to $1,833.50.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 5.15 points to begin the week at 913.15.

All but one of the 12 TSX subgroups were positive in the first hour of trade, with materials ahead 0.7%, gold and information technology better by 0.6% each.

Only energy missed the party, down 0.6%.
