03:53 PM EST - Viterra Inc. : announced that its first-quarter net loss was $33.0 million or $0.14 per share, compared to net earnings of $41.2 million or $0.20 per share in same three-month period of 2008. Excluding the fertilizer inventory writedown, Viterra's net loss for the quarter was $13.6 million or $0.06 per share. Viterra posted a net corporate income tax recovery of $10.8 million in the three-month period ended January 31, 2009, compared to a net corporate income tax recovery of $3.3 million in the same period of 2008. Consolidated sales and other operating revenues for the first quarter increased to $1.38 billion, from $1.32 billion in the year-ago quarter. Viterra Inc.
