Canada's third-largest life insurer by market value reported net income of $497 million, or 86 cents a share, in the three months ended March 31, up from $491 million, or 84 cents a share, a year earlier. First-quarter operating earnings were 96 cents a share, compared with 84 cents. Analysts expected the company to report earnings before exceptional items of 96 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.
