Jobs Data Drives Gold to 2-Week High

Gold rose 2% to a two-week high on Friday, after a U.S. jobs report, making more likely an interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve this month.

Non-farm payrolls increased 211,000 in November, the U.S. Labor Department said. September and October data was revised to show 35,000 more jobs than previously reported.

Spot gold was up 2.1% at $1,084.80 U.S. an ounce, on track for a 1.9% gain for the week.

The main focus for the gold market now remains the aforementioned Fed's meeting on Dec. 15-16. A rate increase would be the first in nearly a decade. Higher rates tend to weigh on non-interest-paying gold by increasing the opportunity cost of holding the shiny metal.

Meantime, silver rose 2.5% to $14.44 U.S. an ounce. Platinum gained 3% to $870.60 U.S. an ounce and palladium rose 2.9% to $550.40 U.S. an ounce.
