Claude, the artificial intelligence (A.I.) chatbot from startup company Anthropic, has recovered $395,000 U.S. of Bitcoin (BTC) that had been trapped on a computer for years.
According to a social media post, Claude managed to crack a forgotten Bitcoin wallet and recover five BTC from a user's computer that are worth a combined $395,000 U.S.
The Claude chatbot helped the owner search their own computer for an old wallet file, which was then decrypted with a password the owner had written down in a notebook.
The owner had been trying for weeks to access the digital wallet and says the recovery happened when he “dumped my whole college computer into Claude.”
The chatbot located an old wallet backup from December 2019 that was encrypted with a password the user had written down.
Online posts in response to the story say the recovery opens a door for A.I. to help other users recover their forgotten crypto wallets and access Bitcoin and other digital assets.
Millions of Bitcoins are believed to remain inaccessible because owners lost passwords, drives, or recovery phrases over the years.
BTC is currently trading at $79,300 U.S.
