Bitcoin Encounters Resistance At $87,000

Bitcoin (BTC) continues to trade at its highest level since the start of this year but is struggling to breakthrough resistance it is encountering at $87,000 U.S.

The largest cryptocurrency fell 1.2% on Oct. 5 after hitting $87,000 U.S. for the third time in a week. In early trading on Oct. 6, BTC is changing hands at $86,200 U.S.

Analysts say that $87,000 U.S. appears to be the latest roadblock for Bitcoin following a greater than 40% rally since the end of August.

For several months, Bitcoin struggled to break above resistance it encountered at $65,000 U.S. In late August, the cryptocurrency finally got above that level and steadily rose in September.

Now, analysts say that BTC needs to break above $87,000 U.S. for it to regain $90,000 U.S. and potentially rally above the key threshold of $100,000 U.S.

Each time Bitcoin has reached $87,000 U.S., a burst of selling by investors has knocked it lower.

Getting past that level requires buyers who can withstand selling and hold Bitcoin above $87,000 U.S. long-term. The current price of Bitcoin is its highest level in eight months.

Bitcoin hit an all-time high of just over $126,000 U.S. exactly one year ago, on Oct. 6, 2025. It then entered a prolonged “crypto winter” that it only recently emerged from.

The total crypto market is now valued at $2.93 trillion U.S. as a broader rally has lifted other digital assets such as Ethereum (ETH) and XRP (XRP).
