Google Launches Ethereum Merge Countdown Timer

Google (GOOGL) has launched a countdown timer for the Ethereum (ETH) Merge that is now underway.

Typing any variation of “Ethereum Merge” or “The Merge” into a Google search engine shows a countdown ticker with the estimated time left until the Merge is expected to be completed.

The Merge will see Ethereum transition to a more energy efficient proof-of-stake protocol from its current proof-of-work operating model and is viewed as a major event in the development of the cryptocurrency sector.

Google said in a tweet that the timer is “a fun little surprise” and a way to show their appreciation for the Merge and more energy efficient cryptocurrency mining.

Google added that the timer is directly connected to the Ethereum blockchain, updating the countdown in real-time.

Google is increasingly becoming involved in cryptocurrencies, with the search giant establishing a Web3 team this past May.

Recent Google search data has shown that searches for the term “Ethereum Merge” generated a score above 50 several times over the last 30 days, reaching a peak of 100 on September 3.

A value of 100 is “peak popularity” for a search term, while a value of 50 means the term is half as popular.

Meanwhile, a recent report by CoinGecko found that people in Singapore are most interested in the Ethereum Merge, followed by Switzerland and Canada.

Country rankings were determined by analyzing the frequency of search terms, including “Ethereum Merge,” “ETH Merge” and “Ethereum PoW.”
