Futures Don’t Move Tuesday

Lithium Americas, TMX in Focus

Futures for Canada's main stock index were flat on Tuesday as investors looked for clues on the interest rate-hike trajectory ahead of speeches from both U.S. Federal Reserve chair and the Bank of Canada's governor due later in the day.

The TSX closed Monday down 129.42 points to 20,628.92.

March futures on the S&P/TSX index were unchanged Tuesday morning.

The Canadian dollar added 0.11 cents to 74.49 cents U.S.

In company news, a U.S. judge on Monday ordered regulators to reconsider part of the permit approving Lithium Americas Corp's Thacker Pass lithium mine project in Nevada, while rejecting claims that the project would cause unnecessary harm to the environment or wildlife.

In earnings, TMX Group reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter profits, but missed market expectations on revenue.

TFI International TFII.TO reported its fourth-quarter results, with both earnings and revenue falling below market expectations.

On the economic calendar, Statistics Canada reported, in December, Canada's merchandise exports decreased 1.2%, while imports were down 1.3%. As a result, Canada's merchandise trade deficit with the world narrowed from $219 million in November to $160 million in December.

The TSX Venture Exchange slipped 6.49 points, or 1.1%, Monday to 613.60.

ON WALLSTREET

Stock futures were little changed Tuesday as investors braced for the latest commentary due Tuesday from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials dipped 16 points, or 0.1%, early Tuesday to 33,918.

Futures for the S&P 500 poked ahead 6.25 points, or 0.2%, to 4,129.75.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite hiked 49.25 points, or 0.4%, to 12,564.75.

Chegg plummeted 22% on disappointing guidance.

Those moves followed another down session for markets, as bond yields rose and pressured growth stocks.

Earnings season presses on Tuesday with results from companies such as Chipotle and Royal Caribbean. So far this season, a little over half of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings, with about 69% surpassing expectations.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index lost eight points, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng gained 0.4%.

Oil prices gained $1.13 to $75.24 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices took on $4.10 to $1,883.60 U.S. an ounce.
