Automotive company General Motors (NYSE:GM) is spending $71 million U.S. to establish a new campus in Pasadena, California that will be used to explore and advance futuristic products such as flying cars and lunar rover vehicles.
The campus will be used for GM's advanced design centre operations that focus on developing concept and future mobility projects that fall outside the scope of existing production vehicles.
General Motors said the campus will include an innovation lab and immersive technology capabilities, including augmented and virtual reality.
The new site is closer to technology centres on the U.S. West Coast and creates a recruiting opportunity with its proximity to leading universities and design schools, the automaker said.
In January of this year, GM unveiled a concept for a futuristic flying Cadillac - a self-driving vehicle which takes off and lands vertically and carries passengers through the air.
The automaker's other innovative developments include its commercial van business and a lunar rover concept developed with Lockheed Martin that would make vehicles for use by astronauts on the moon’s surface.
