WestJet Cuts More Flights As Omicron Variant Hurts Demand

WestJet Airlines is cutting more flights as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 hampers demand across the airline industry.

The Calgary-based carrier has announced that its scaled-back schedule will continue until February 28. When the company announced last month that it was cutting flights, it said the reduced service would be in place through the end of January.

Additionally, the airline is now saying it will consolidate 20% of scheduled flights next month. The reduced service in January affected 15% of flights.

WestJet said 547 staff members were impacted by COVID-19 as of January 17. The company’s total workforce numbers 8,000 people.
