Aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. (BA) is investing an additional $450 million U.S. in Wisk to support development of flying taxi cabs.
California-based Wisk, co-owned by Boeing and Kitty Hawk, the air vehicle firm launched by Google founder Larry Page, is one of dozens of electric vertical takeoff and landing makers but differs in focusing its energy on autonomous or pilot-less flight.
Boeing has declined to give a date for what it terms the “sixth-generation Wisk passenger vehicle,” but has previously said that Wisk aims to present its flying taxis for certification around 2028.
Boeing said it aims to launch the first autonomous passenger-carrying vehicle to be certified in the U.S.
