‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Crosses $500 Million In Second Weekend

The film “Top Gun: Maverick" continues to fly high at the global box office.

The sequel to the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun” earned an estimated $86 million U.S. at the
domestic North American box office in its second weekend of release, according to industry
tracking data.

That's a drop of just 32% from the film's record setting opening last weekend. That type of a
drop for a blockbuster movie is remarkable since most tentpole films are front loaded — making
most of their money in the opening weekend before dropping steeply.

"Top Gun: Maverick" recorded the lowest percentage drop for any film that's opened to $100
million U.S. or more in recent box office history.

Other recent blockbuster movies “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” dropped 67% in
its second weekend of release, while “The Batman” fell 50%, according to Comscore data.

Globally, “Top Gun: Maverick has now earned $548.6 million U.S., according to Paramount
Pictures, which produced, marketed, and released the movie.

The new “Top Gun” film faced little competition at the box office this past weekend. However,
that will change next week when “Jurassic World: Dominion” hits theatres.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was supposed to hit theaters in 2020 but was delayed multiple times
because of the global pandemic. While other theatrical films pivoted to streaming, the “Top Gun”
sequel waited until audiences could experience it on the big screen.
