According to a report published by Frankfurt School in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), 2015 produced a new record for global investment in renewable energy. Excluding hydro-electric projects, the amount of money committed to renewables increased by 5% to $285.9 billion, exceeding the previous record of $278.5 billion reached in 2011.
The report further notes that the amount of generating capacity added in wind and solar photovoltaics was a staggering 118GW. This is well above the figure for 2014 when the capacity added totaled 94GW.
According to the report, the worldwide investment in renewable power capacity totaled $265.8 billion, which is more than double the dollar allocations to new coal and gas generation. The renewable sector is also attracting a great deal of public market investment.
In 2015, public investments in the sector totaled an impressive $12.8 billion, down 21% over the previous year’s figure but still close to the average seen for the years since 2008.
