European aircraft manufacturer Airbus SE (AIR) says it will create 500 net new jobs in Canada this year as it ramps up production of its A220 commercial aircraft.
Airbus, which is based in the Netherlands, says the majority of new hires will be based in Quebec, where the company has manufacturing capacity.
Airbus now has more than 4,000 employees at 10 locations in Canada.
In addition to the A220 program, Airbus’ Canadian operations include Airbus Helicopters Canada based in Fort Erie, Ontario, and Navblue situated in Waterloo, Ontario.
Airbus forms a global duopoly in commercial aircraft manufacturing with U.S.-based Boeing Co. (BA). The A220 is a narrow-body commercial aircraft that was originally made by Canada’s Bombardier (BBD).
Airbus’ stock is up 8% over the last year and trading at $32.47 U.S. per share.
