Rogers Communications (RCI) says it is bringing 5G wireless internet to the Toronto subway system.
Rogers has entered into an agreement to buy the company that owns the wireless network in Toronto's subway with plans to install 5G internet across the entire system.
Rogers has agreed to purchase privately held BAI Communications' Canadian operations. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In 2012, BAI was awarded a $25 million contract to build and operate a public Wi-Fi and cellular network in the Toronto subway system.
However, Freedom Mobile is the only telecom company that has signed on to provide coverage to its customers in the subway system, leaving most people without internet service while riding Toronto’s subway.
Rogers said it will build a comprehensive 5G wireless network for the entire subway system in Toronto. The company added that its investment will also bring 911 coverage to the city’s transit system.
Rogers said the 5G network will take two years to complete.
News of Rogers investment in Toronto’s subway system comes a few weeks after the company received federal approval to purchase rival Shaw Communications (SJR) in a deal valued at more than $20 billion.
The Shaw purchase came with several federal government requirements related to investments aimed at making Canada’s wireless industry more advanced and competitive.
Rogers’ stock has declined 11% over the last 12 months to $65.76 per share
