Summer is just around the corner, if only on the calendar, and folks who can afford it will again start thinking soon about keeping their homes and offices cooler. But in this more environmentally aware time, this hankering for cooler things has to be tempered with a desire for such systems that are more energy-efficient and nicer to Mother Earth. Concerns over global warming have crept into the thinking of most of us in North America, and the companies that can capitalize on this awareness are the ones that will gain the advantage on their bottom line.
That’s why Vancouver-based Smartcool Systems Inc. (TSX:Venture: SSC) bears watching. Smartcool Systems Inc. is a cleantech company that specializes in energy and cost reduction technologies for the HVAC and refrigeration systems of commercial, industrial and retail businesses. The Smartcool product line of green technologies reduces the electricity consumption (kilowatt hours) and demand (kilowatts) of air conditioning and refrigeration compressors.
The company’s Smartcool Energy Saving Module™ is built into refrigeration and air conditioning systems to make them more efficient, resulting in proven cost savings, less energy consumption and a lower carbon footprint. SSC prides itself on being able to retrofit its equipment to make it compatible with all known control systems.
More than 26,000 of these units have been installed worldwide for customers such as supermarkets, food distributors, telecommunications companies, hospitals, and hotels. Smartcool's new ECO(3)(tm) provides the same environmental and cost-saving benefits to residential and commercial customers using one and two compressor cooling systems.
Much like most small startup companies, Smartcool has thrown in its lot with bigger outfits to get the word out about the prowess of its product. In early-to-mid June, the company signed a distribution agreement with ATI AirTest Technologies, based in Delta, British Columbia, to sell and market Smartcool’s technologies throughout North America.
SSC, which has been in business since 1987, also manufactures the latest generation of energy saving module known as the ESM 4000. The system in sold internationally and supported by an experienced distributor network.
Each year, businesses using the Smartcool Energy Saving Module are responsible for reducing electricity consumption by more than 213,000 Mwh and Greenhouse Gas emissions by 250,000 tons.
Investors aiming to keep their ''cool'' over this stock may find it difficult; SSC is in the bottom region of a 52-week trading range that topped at 85 cents on June 10 of last year, plunging down to the freezing depths of eight cents just before Christmas. The environmental aspects may attract some investors; the bargain spot it occupies on the Venture charts may provide another enticement.
