Metro Grocery Workers In Toronto Prepare To Strike

Grocery workers at Metro (MRU) locations across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are preparing to strike as early as July 19.

About 3,700 employees at 27 Metro stores across the GTA could strike as early as midnight
as collective bargaining between the retailer and Unifor, the national union representing the workers, continues.

Unifor has received a strong strike mandate from the Metro employees, with 100% voting in favour of the job action if a deal cannot be reached.

Union representatives have said that progress has been made since negotiations began in late June, but major wage, benefit, and other financial issues remain outstanding.

Unifor has also said that it is seeking a new collective agreement that addresses cost of living challenges and ensures that Metro workers share in the company’s profits.

With food prices at record highs across Canada, Metro and other grocery store chains have reported sizable profits over the past 18 months.

Metro’s stock has risen 6% over the last 12 months to trade at $74.13 per share.
