Metro Grocery Workers Reach New Labour Deal And Avoid Strike

Employees at 27 Metro (MRU) grocery store locations across the Greater Toronto Area have reached a new collective agreement and called off plans to go on strike.

Unifor, which is the union representing the grocery workers, said in a written statement that the new labour agreement provides for improved working conditions and better pay.

Details of the tentative agreement were not disclosed prior to it being presented to the union membership for a ratification vote.

Had a strike occurred, it would have involved about 3,700 Metro workers across Greater Toronto.

Unifor says it is gearing up to bargain on behalf of grocery workers at other major retailers over the next two years.

Metro’s stock has risen 5% over the past 12 months to trade at $73.11 per share.
