Metro Asks Ontario Labour Ministry To Intervene In Toronto Strike

Grocer Metro (MRU) has asked the Government of Ontario to intervene in an ongoing strike by workers at its grocery store locations across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Specifically, Metro has asked the Ontario Ministry of Labour to help it resolve job actions being undertaken by Metro workers represented by Unifor at 27 Toronto stores.

More than 3,500 workers rejected a proposed contract at the end of July and have been on strike ever since.

Metro said in a written statement that Unifor has refused repeated requests to meet at the bargaining table again, prompting it to seek help from the provincial government.

For its part, Unifor’s leadership team has said that they are waiting for a new, acceptable offer from the grocery company before resuming talks.

Under Ontario’s labour laws, either a union or an employer can apply to have a conciliation officer appointed to help them reach a new collective agreement.

It is not clear if the Ontario Ministry of Labour will intervene in the Metro strike.

Metro’s stock has decreased 2% over the last 12 months to trade at $70.67 per share
