This past weekend, Hamas militants launched one of the largest and most audacious incursions into southern Israeli territory. In response, Israel has sought to deal an enormous blow to Hamas’ leadership and offensive capability. However, it must conduct these operations with the knowledge that Hamas holds 200 or more captives. Moreover, a further escalation could pull in other Middle East powers and provoke a wider and much more devastating conflict.
We now know that over 2,500 Hamas militants crossed the southern border using trucks, bulldozers, motorcycles, speedboats, and even paragliders. The armed force targeted Israeli soldiers and large civilian areas, including a trance music festival wherein hundreds of concert goers were killed.
The shocking attack represented a massive escalation in an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a Sunni Islamist political and military organization that governs the Gaza Strip portion of the Palestinian territories. Israel retaliated with a massive bombing campaign in Gaza. Recent reports suggest that Israel is prepared to launch a large-scale campaign through the land, sea, and air.
Israel’s allies, including the United States, have provided strong statements of support following the attacks. Moreover, President Joe Biden has said that his country will be able to provide military and humanitarian aid to both Israel and Ukraine in their ongoing war efforts.
