Tesla To Raise Pay For Hourly Workers

Electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) is raising the hourly pay of workers at its battery factory in Nevada by about 10% starting in January 2024.

According to multiple media reports, Tesla is lifting the pay of its workers at the manufacturing plant to $22 U.S. per hour from $20 U.S. at the low end, and to $34.50 U.S. an hour from $30.65 U.S. on the high end.

The pay increases will add anywhere from $2 U.S. to $8.30 U.S. an hour to the pay of hourly workers in Nevada.

The pay increases come as Tesla tries to fend off workers’ interest in forming a union and pushing for a collective agreement.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union this autumn wrung record contracts from rival automakers General Motors (GM), Ford Motor Co. (F) and Stellantis (STLA).

The UAW has said that it wants to unionize Tesla, as well as Toyota Motor Co. (TM) in the U.S.

In October, workers at Tesla service and collision repair centres in Sweden touched off a labour strike that has now spread to Denmark, Finland, and Norway.

One of Denmark’s largest pension funds recently announced that it would sell its holding of Tesla stock over the U.S. automaker’s refusal to negotiate with labour unions.

The stock of Tesla has risen 133% in 2023 to trade at $252.08 U.S. per share.
