Canada To Require That All New Vehicles Be Electric By 2035

The federal government in Ottawa is expected to announce in coming days that all new vehicles sold within Canada must be fully electric by 2035.

Ottawa is set to unveil new regulations that require all new vehicles sold within the country be zero emissions within 12 years.

Known as the “Electric Vehicle Availability Standard,” the new rules will help ensure that supply is available to the Canadian marketplace and shorten wait times for consumers to buy an electric vehicle.

The new federal rules follow the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec that have already set the same target of being 100% emission free with new vehicles by 2035.

Electric vehicles currently account for about 13% of all vehicles sold worldwide each year but that number is expected to rise to 45% by 2030 as governments around the world legislate their adoption.

Automakers including General Motors (GM) and Toyota (TM) plan to shift their entire fleets to electric power over the coming decade.
