General Motors Cuts Shift At Ontario Plant Starting In 2026

U.S. automotive giant General Motors (GM) has announced plans to cut a shift at its Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant starting in early 2026.

General Motors says the company’s Oshawa facility will continue operating on three shifts until January 2026, when the plant will be reduced to a two-shift operation.

The loss of a third shift will result in an unspecified number of layoffs at the Oshawa plant.

General Motors says the timeline reflects current production plans and that it will work closely with impacted employees throughout the transition.

The Detroit automaker has been discussing a shift reduction at its main Canadian plant since May of this year following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs placed on Canadian vehicles.

The union representing Canadian autoworkers called the shift cut a “reckless decision that deals a direct blow to our members and threatens to ripple through the entire auto parts supplier network.”

The plant in Oshawa currently makes Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty and light-duty pick-up trucks for the North American market.

The stock of General Motors has risen 13% this year to trade at $58.01 U.S. per share.
