Walt Disney Co. (DIS) scored a hit over the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend with its new animated movie “Zootopia 2.”
Zootopia 2 led the holiday box office with an estimated $156 million U.S. in ticket sales over its first five days of release.
In all, the North American box office racked up $294 million U.S. in ticket receipts, marking one of the best Thanksgiving holiday performances ever.
If the early estimates of ticket sales hold, it would represent the third or fourth best Thanksgiving box office performance of all time, and the most ticket sales since 2013.
Also helping the weekend box office was the film “Wicked: For Good,” which racked up nearly $65 million U.S. in ticket sales, bringing its North American total to $$270.4 million U.S.
For Disney, Zootopia 2 had the highest global opening of an animated movie of all time, with an estimated haul of $556 million U.S. (North America and international combined).
Additionally, the animated sequel posted the second highest Thanksgiving day and Thanksgiving five-day openings ever in North America.
The current record holder is 2024′s “Moana 2,” which tallied $221 million U.S. for the five-day Thanksgiving period.
Disney has another holiday blockbuster on deck with the sequel “Avatar: Fire and Ash” that is scheduled to be released shortly before Christmas Day.
DIS stock is down 6% this year and trading at $104.47 U.S. per share.
