Canada’s Shopify Hit With Outage On Cyber Monday

Canadian e-commerce company Shopify (SHOP) was hit with a major outage on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The outage left thousands of Shopify’s business customers unable to manage transactions during one of the biggest online shopping events.

Ottawa-based Shopify said select merchants were experiencing issues logging into Shopify, while others were unable to access point-of-sale systems involved in online transactions.

By the end of day on Dec. 1, Shopify said its services were beginning to recover but that issues remained that were impacting merchants.

The website Downdetector showed thousands of Shopify users reporting problems with the e-commerce company’s website, with as many as 4,000 issues reported at the problem’s peak.

Shopify helps businesses run their websites and online sales channels, offering software for merchants as well as services such as advertising and payment processing tools.

Shopify says it handles more than 10% of all e-commerce transactions in the U.S. The company hosts online storefronts for large retailers such as Reebok, Mattel (MAT), and Nestle (NSRGY).

Cyber Monday is widely regarded as the biggest online shopping event of the year. Adobe (ADBE) estimates that U.S. shoppers spent about $14 billion U.S. online Dec. 1.

SHOP stock has risen 38% this year to trade at $149.28 U.S. per share.
