Microsoft Makes $18 Billion A.I. Investment In Australia

U.S. technology giant Microsoft (MSFT) is making an $18 billion U.S. artificial intelligence (A.I.) infrastructure investment in Australia.

The Seattle-based company is partnering with the Australian government on A.I. initiatives that span cybersecurity, workforce training, and new technology development.

Microsoft will also expand adoption of its Azure cloud computing infrastructure in the country by more than 140% by the end of 2029.

This is the company’s biggest ever investment in Australia and comes as U.S. firms look to expand their A.I. technologies around the world and gain market share.

The partnership will also see Microsoft expand its collaboration with the Australian Signals Directorate, the country’s intelligence agency, and train three million Australians on the use of A.I. technologies by 2028.

“Our National AI Plan is all about capturing the economic opportunities of this transformative technology while protecting Australians from the risks,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at a press conference.

Microsoft is not the only U.S. technology giant pushing into Australia. Last summer, Amazon (AMZN) pledged $20 billion to expand its cloud computing services in the country.

Microsoft currently operates three data centres in Australia, with three more under construction in the cities of Melbourne and Sydney.

MSFT stock has declined 8% this year to trade at $432.92 U.S. per share.
