China’s Huawei Is Developing New Smartphone Microchips

Chinese technology giant Huawei says it is developing advanced microchips and semiconductors for its next generation smartphones, with plans to release them this autumn.

The new chip development comes as Huawei looks to capitalize on the fact that its U.S. rival Nvidia (NVDA) is prevented from selling its high-end processors in China.

The new smartphone chips also come as Huawei’s rivalry with Apple (AAPL) and its iPhone intensifies in the nation of 1.4 billion people.

In a news release, Huawei said that it has created a new engineering approach called “LogicFolding” to manufacture its next generation of “Kirin” smartphone microchips.

That advance comes as Nvidia continues to face U.S. export restrictions in China.

Huawei’s Mate 60 smartphone, launched in 2023, included 5G connectivity powered by an advanced microchip that helped the company regain market share from Apple.

Executives at Huawei now say that, by 2031, its new microchip technology could deliver capabilities equivalent to 1.4-nanometer processing speeds.

Huawei plans to deploy its newest chip technology in its Mate 90 smartphone series that will launch this autumn.

Analysts say Huawei’s new microchip and semiconductor architecture should keep the company and its smartphone competitive within the Chinese marketplace.

However, Huawei sells few of its smartphones internationally outside of China. Huawei is a privately held company and its stock does not trade on a public exchange.

AAPL stock is up 54% in the last 12 months and currently trading near an all-time high of $311.40 U.S. on a split adjusted basis.
