Nvidia Enters PC Market With New Laptop Microchip

Nvidia (NVDA) is entering the market for personal computers (PCs) with a new microchip that will serve as the main processor for laptops.

At Taiwan’s Computex conference, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the new “N1X processor that will be incorporated into an RTX Spark superchip.

The microchip will power new laptop computers from Microsoft (MSFT), Dell Technologies (DELL) and HP (HPQ), among others.

With the new processor, Nvidia is entering a computer market that’s long been dominated by competitors such as Intel (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Nvidia’s initial plan is to release more than 30 laptop and 10 desktop computers with the new microchip, said the chipmaker in Taiwan.

Analysts say the RTX Spark microchip represents a major shakeup for the PC industry, which is already experiencing big changes due to artificial intelligence (A.I.).

Nvidia’s new computer processor is being made in partnership with British chipmaker Arm Holdings (ARM) and will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM).

The first laptops powered by Nvidia’s new chip will be as thin as 14 millimeters, carry a premium price tag, and will also debut in some desktop models.

The RTX Spark microchip will eventually expand to different price points. It will initially be targeted towards creators, A.I. developers and video game enthusiasts.

NVDA stock has risen 54% in the last 12 months to trade at $211.14 U.S. per share.
