Is Meta’s New AI Tool an Existential Threat to Shopify?

Shopify (TSX:SHOP)(NASDAQ:SHOP) has long been one of the market's highest conviction internet names, thanks to its impressive founder-led culture, forward-thinking
management, and wide moat in e-commerce. However, a major new artificial intelligence threat is causing some experts to reconsider their bullish stances on the tech giant.

Rothschild & Co Redburn analyst Dominic Ball believes Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) could pose a serious challenge to Canada’s leading e-commerce platform. Ball recently changed his rating on the stock from Buy to Neutral, pointing to Meta’s AI ambitions as a potential long-term threat to the foundation of Shopify’s business.

Ball’s concern is that Meta may move beyond offering a basic AI assistant for consumers and introduce a more advanced small-business tool that could help entrepreneurs launch online stores from a single prompt. Such a product could potentially create storefronts, generate and manage targeted ads, process payments, and organize customer relationship management data.

If Meta expands in this direction, it could pressure the same business areas that have supported Shopify’s growth for years. Ball estimates that roughly half of Shopify’s U.S. volume could be vulnerable to this kind of competitive push. As a result, his firm argues that the stock’s premium valuation, once justified by expectations for durable growth, may need to come down quickly.
However, that more cautious view is not universal among Wall Street analysts. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Wood recently initiated coverage with an overweight rating, arguing that Shopify still provides merchants with important, difficult-to-replace value.
For the moment, investors will need to monitor how Meta’s AI efforts and the broader competitive environment evolve. Year to date, Shopify's stock is down 27%.
