Tyme Stock Climbs on SM-88 Helping Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients

Tyme Technologies (NASDAQ:TYME) is seeing shares climb Monday on news of encouraging data from a 14-patient early clinical trial of SM-88 for the treatment of late-stage metastatic breast cancer in patients where other therapies have had limited effectiveness.

SM-88 is an experimental compound comprised of a proprietary mix of established drugs designed to selectively target tumors without harming healthy body tissue.

The company believes SM-88 can be effective in treating an array of cancer types. An ongoing phase 1b/2 study is currently in the latter half of the trial evaluating the drug for treating prostate cancer.

Today, the New York City-based company said that the median overall survival of 14 metastatic breast cancer patients that received an average of 2.5 different types of therapy prior to SM-88 was 35 months. Three patients remain alive five years after their first treatment with SM-88.

In all, 43% of patients demonstrated a complete or partial response while on SM-88 alone, with responses observed across genetic profiles, including the oft-hard-to-treat triple negative breast cancer patients.

Importantly, the treatment was shown to be safe (no serious drug-related adverse events reported) and well tolerated. Due to the low toxicity, patients demonstrated an improved quality of life shortly after starting SM-88 therapy, a key component of the therapy for Tyme compared to existing therapies that generally come with a bevy of unpleasant side effects.

Shares of TYME have shot ahead 7.4% to $4.35 about one hour into morning action and have an intra-day high so far at $4.75.
