The Ford Motor Company has announced that it is recalling 550,000 cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in North America to fix a gearshift problem that could cause the vehicles to roll away on their own.
The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape SUVs. Ford said in a news release that a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can fall off. If this happens, the driver could shift into park but the vehicle could be in another gear and move on its own, which could cause an injury or crash.
Ford also said that it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries that have occurred. Ford is advising owners to use the parking brake when bringing the vehicles to a stop. Dealers will replace the shifter bushing at no cost to owners. People impacted by the recall will be notified by July 30th.
